About this Workshop
Slow, deep, long breaths help to detoxify, calm down and sleep. Insomnia patients are commonly advised to practice breathing exercises. The importance of breath is often neglected and until problems arise it is unfortunately ignored. What most people are unaware of is that wrong breathing habits are the cause of many problems they face such as sleep disturbances.
There are two types of breathing patterns which are: Diaphragmatic breathing and Thoracic (chest or shallow) breathing. Diaphragmatic is how newborns breathe, also people breathe like this during sleep. Chest breathing on the other hand is short and rapid, it engages the chest. People breathe like this especially when they are anxious. Chest breathing leads to increased heart rate, dizziness, and muscle tension. With chest breathing, you are not being oxygenated enough which can lead to sleep disturbances and fatigue. Diaphragmatic breathing, on the other hand, stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system therefore deep breathing can help you sleep better.
