Breathwork safety: who should not practise

Breathwork can bring strong physical and emotional reactions, so it is not right for everyone. Do not practise if you are pregnant, under 18, or have a condition such as epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma or a severe mental health condition. This page is general information, not medical advice: please talk to your doctor before taking part if you have any health condition.

This is not medical advice

This page is general information, not medical advice. If you have any health condition, or are unsure whether breathwork is right for you, please talk to your doctor before taking part.

Contraindications

For your safety, please do not take part in the Holosomatic® Method if you have any of the following:

  • Neurological and cardiovascular: epilepsy or seizures, stroke or transient ischaemic attacks, detached retina, glaucoma, uncontrolled high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease (heart attack history, arrhythmia, heart failure), aneurysm (personal or immediate family history), prescription blood thinners, implanted medical devices such as pacemakers.
  • Mental health: severe mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, psychotic episodes or dissociative disorders; severe anxiety or PTSD without professional support; psychiatric hospitalisation or emotional crisis in the past 10 years; active substance withdrawal; low impulse control.
  • Chronic and autoimmune conditions: Addison's disease, chronic respiratory disease (COPD-II, COPD-III), unstable diabetes, severe autoimmune or inflammatory disease, terminal illness, cancer during active treatment or in advanced stages (if in remission, ask your doctor).
  • Acute and musculoskeletal: acute illness, severe adrenal fatigue or chronic fatigue syndrome, osteoporosis or unhealed injuries, severe chronic pain affecting movement, major surgery in the last 6 months.

When not to practise

Some situations mean waiting rather than never:

  • During pregnancy.
  • Within 24 hours of alcohol, drugs or psychedelics.
  • After fasting for the past 48 hours.
  • If you have asthma, only with your inhaler with you.
  • If you are under 18: all InnerCamp programmes and events are for adults.

How InnerCamp screens participants

Contraindications are listed on every event page and in our Terms, and we ask you to read them before you buy. You must tell your facilitator about any medical treatment, procedure or condition that may affect your session. If you have health concerns, we ask for written approval from your doctor before you join.

If you live with anxiety, PTSD or panic attacks, please tell the team when you arrive so we can look after you personally. Before residential retreats we send a check-in form where you can note any medical needs.

Health and safety policy

How InnerCamp trains facilitators in safety

Our facilitator trainings are trauma-informed throughout. Facilitators learn contraindications, consent, preventing retraumatisation and how to support strong reactions, and they are personally evaluated on boundaries, self-care and professional standards before they are certified. Certification can be withheld from anyone who breaks our Code of Ethics.

Code of EthicsHow to choose a breathwork facilitator training

Before, during and after a session

  • Before: wear comfortable layers and avoid eating for at least 2 hours.
  • During: you can slow down or rest at any time, and the team is there to support you.
  • After: allow quiet time to integrate and avoid overstimulating places and screens where you can.
